Music Monday

I've been racking my brain trying to come up with an appropriate Thanksgiving playlist. Oddly enough, it turns out there aren't all that many songs about turkeys or pumpkin pie or having awkward conversations about your dating life. Weird.

So I got to thinking. We're celebrating the pilgrims, who came over on ships (or Columbus day, but that doesn't really work for me right now so I'm going to ignore it).....so really, what more appropriate way to celebrate Thanksgiving than with a little Yacht Rock?? Enjoy.

Track 2
Track 3 (I've shared this before, but it's just too darn good not to include)
Track 9 (with EXCELLENT modern remakes of the same song here and here)

Happy Thanksgiving!

Music Monday

It's a gloriously rainy day and I wish I was curled up in a cozy blanket, taking numerous cat naps while I watch some Lifetime original movie or something. But since I can't be dreaming right now, the next best thing is a little modern dream pop playlist.

(This playlist is also largely inspired by my current obsession with SVIIB...ergo tracks 1-3.)

Track 2
Track 3

Music Monday

I finally bit the bullet and bought a car this weekend, and I am now the proud owner of a Subaru Outback. Though commonly thought of as a lesbian car, I just like to think of myself as "outdoorsy with a hint of soccer mom." (Although I've never been one to turn down the opportunity for a good laugh, and consequently have been the one making most of the jokes.) Also, I feel like this car fits my "liberal hippie" persona that I so enjoy elaborating on whenever my father is within earshot. So without further ado, I present to you: Subee Songs

Track 10 (I had to)

Music Monday

I have been hoping, waiting, and praying for it to be fall for weeks now. This Seattle-bred gal likes her rainy days. So you can imagine my delight when I woke up to see the following forecast:
Beautiful, glorious, wonderfully cloudy, drizzly days alllllllll week long. To celebrate the arrival of rain boots, scarves, and "sweatah weathah," I present this week's music monday: Songs for Singing in the Rain

The classics: here and here.

The classic rock: here.

In a huge Fleetwood Mac phase right now (perhaps a clue to an upcoming Music Monday theme?) Rain-related Stevie Nicks here

The classic 80s pop: here.

The classic 90s grunge pop: here.

And some newer jams: here here and here

And for those of you who are fans of the Italian rap genre (who isn't, right?), I present a very special track here.  "Piove" is the Italian word for rain.

Music Monday

A lot of people spend all week waiting for the weekend to come. I, however, count down the days until Thursday, the night that Jersey Shore is on. I like to call it....Jersday.
And I know it's obnoxious and silly when people say that they liked something way before it was trendy.....but seriously guys, I was obsessed with New Jersey loooooong before these eight treasures appeared on our televisions. And ever since I saw the 2003 episode of MTV True Life: "I have a Summer Share" (not to be confused with the later, though equally spectacular, 2004 episode "True Life: I'm a Jersey Shore Girl"), I've loved the world of guidos, Jersey accents, and....techno music. So allow me to pretend to be DJ Pauly D for a moment here as I present this week's Music Monday: Jersey Shore Inspired Jams.

This playlist was inspired by a fantastic video (click here). Download the track here and dance to it over and over and over again...

And the jams keep on coming!
Track 9 (and please please please do yourself a favor and watch this video)

Music Monday

Remember that roadtrip to Boise that I made a few weeks ago? Well the whole reason for it was to celebrate my Dad's birthday by going to a concert....a Ted Nugent concert. Because sometimes I like to put on a flannel shirt, ripped jeans, and pretend like I am an extra in Dazed and Confused.

Presenting Other music that I'm too young to listen to: Dad Edition.

  • A couple of summers ago, Dad and I went to see Stephen Stills in concert, and I still maintain it was one of the best shows I've ever been to. Three of my favorite jams involve Mr. Stills: Here, here, and here.
  • Also excellent vintage jams: here, here, and here.
  • This is the ringtone that I have for when my dad calls me. Those who know him will know how true it is.

Music Monday

(one day late because of Labor Day)

Today I caught a glimpse of myself and realized that I looked like my mom circa 1989-- leggings, flats, a button up denim shirt, tortoise shell ray bans, and a shoulder bag. Which, in turn, reminded me of my roadtrip to Boise last weekend-- I put my ipod on shuffle, but skipped through most of the songs until I landed on music that I'm probably too young to enjoy as much as I do.

This week I bring you Vintage Favorites: Mom Edition (next week: Dad Edition)

Two favorites from the aforementioned concert: Here and here.

Why WOULDN'T you dance here?

This is from his band album, but I enjoy his solo stuff just as much.

Picking my favorite song from this duo was like Sophie's Choice for me.

And my number one absolute favorite Mom Jam ever. EVER. If you were to sort my itunes library by play count, you'd see this little number at the tippy top.

Music Monday

Last week I alluded to this week's theme with California Soul. I discovered said song while watching a Mad Men marathon a couple of years ago-- AMC was using the song to promote the new season of the show. Thank heavens for Shazam. Which is exactly what the following songs have in common: Songs That I Shazammed off of TV/Movies.

  • I've seen both of the Disney Earth Day specials the day they were released, which is due in part to the phenomenal songs they used in their trailers: Earth and Oceans.
  • I watch a lot of tv, and a lot of those tv shows have great songs (especially anything that Josh Schwartz or Rob Thomas have ever worked on). Examples found here, here, and here.
  • I also watch a lot of sappy romantic comedies, and two of the worst ones I've ever watched have introduced two phenomenal songs to my library: This one and this one. (You don't really think I'd really divulge WHICH bad movies they were, did you?)
  • Lastly...have you seen the trailer for the new Reese Witherspoon movie? That song isn't too bad either...

Music Monday

My flight back from Boise left at 6am this morning, and I drove straight from the airport into work. Needless to say, I am feeling more than a little tired. So in honor of my groggy demeanor, the theme of today's Music Monday is: Songs I Listen to When I Get Ready in the Morning (it's a long list this week...editing isn't one of my talents)

Shooting Stars
Alone
Long Distance Call
Little Secrets
Fader
Half Mast
Rich Girls
The Sound

Genre-wise, this last song doesn't fit into this virtual mix-tape at ALL, but it's one of my absolute favorites. It's all about variety, people. I've been known to crank this up and put it on repeat while I put on my makeup and pretend that I live in a David Hockney painting. This song is also a bridge to next week's theme...
California Soul

(ps: Apparently there was a tiny bit of confusion last week...we're all aware of the fact that when you follow these links to stream the songs, there is also an extremely useful button in the upper right corner so that you can add them to your own personal library...right? )

Music Monday

In an effort to make my blog more interesting, I am adding a few new features. First up: Music Monday.
I'm going to try to keep a theme running, but sometimes I'm just going to post songs that I love at the moment. It will be like a regularly updated mix tape, from me to you. This week's theme: Mellow Remakes. It's like your favorite songs took a Xanax and a Sunday nap. Enjoy!
